Marketing expert divulges 14 marketing mistakes that all small business owners should avoid in new book. Don't make these mistakes if you want to stay in business long.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Nov 12, 2010 – A local business coach and marketing expert Todd Warren of San Antonio, TX writes book on 14 critical marketing mistakes that most small business make and how to avoid them.

He states, “the business and marketing world, as we have come to know it has dramatically changed in the last two or three years. The consumer buying habits and expectations have also changed and are causing increased chaos in the realm of marketing and business as a whole. ”

It's no secret that we are in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the 70's. Today companies are facing stiff competition; a double dip recession looming, costs are increasing, overhead is out of control, labor costs are higher and profits are shrinking. All of this has contributed to a bad situation for most small business owners. Consumers are spending less money and less frequently. This means that the fight for the dollar is stronger than ever between you and your competition.

He asks, “Have you ever noticed there are some businesses which not only survive, but really thrive even in a down economy? ” That begs the questions of "What do they know that the rest of us don't know? What are they doing, that the rest of us are not doing? ”

Just five years ago, the average consumer was more interested in being provided with the ultimate in customer service then the businesses they frequented. Today we find that the customer is now more concerned with being treated as special. Companies are starting more frequently to implement customer reward and loyalty programs to help prevent customer attrition and erosion.

Companies now have to make a choice, change or perish…you cannot continue to do the same things you’ve been doing for years and expect the same results. There has been a monumental shift happening in the world of marketing.

Consider some of these key changes and facts. Direct mail usage is falling off and pricing is going up. Consumers no longer wish to be contacted this way. You may have noticed a drop-off in your own direct mail lately. The preferred method of contact for the 18-45 aged demographic is by far digital media with traditional methods considered obsolete. Radio is at an all time low. Its lowest levels of listeners since the Arbitron Service began tracking. Newspapers are in a "free fall" with the top 25 newspapers in the country hemorrhaging money from diminished readership and advertising revenues, with some considering closing up shop for good.

What type of business are you looking to create going into the 2nd decade of the new millennium? If you have a real desire to get more foot traffic and sales in your business, but have been frustrated with your current results from your efforts, I hope to provide you with some alternatives. However, the first thing you must do is confront the situation head on and take responsibility and accountability for where you are currently. You must realize that playing the blame game only satisfies your ego but doesn’t change your bottom line. You must be open minded and willing to learn, change, and then TAKE ACTION on the RIGHT activities, and cease doing things that are not working, regardless of how large a habit they have become.

You must recognize what can set you apart from your existing competition. You cannot just provide products or services with good customer service in a clean environment any longer. Each of your current competitors are already doing this. You should be in the business of creating a memorable shopping or dining experience! Without this mindset, you are just another "one of the bunch. " You must truly understand the difference between having "customers" versus having "guests" in your business that you are building a relationship with.

More importantly, you MUST know your financial numbers, not just guesstimates. Create ways to quantify results for every dollar you invest into your business. Understand the importance of having systems in place to create repeatable processes that will make you money. Lastly, you must have the RIGHT MINDSET to grow your business. How do you perceive your business? Do you understand what we mean when we say, “you need to work "ON" your business not just "IN" your business? ”

Mr. Warren states, “The BOTTOM LINE is this… You can no longer remain the type of business owner that sticks their head in the sand and pretends everything is fine and things will magically turn themselves around. ”
